Find Fraction of a Collection Game
Kids read each pizza order, work out the fraction of toppings the pizza needs, and drag exactly that many onto the dough — building the same fraction-as-operator thinking Cuemath tutors use in live 1:1 classes.

About the game
Find Fraction of a Collection is a free online math game for Grade 3 students learning to find a fraction of a group of objects. A short intro shows how the orders work, then players read each ticket (say, 1/2 mushrooms on a pizza with 8 topping spots) and drag exactly the right number (4 mushrooms) onto the dough. Across 6 rounds, students build the core insight that the denominator tells you how to split the group, and the numerator tells you how many of those parts to take.
From the classroom
How Cuemath Tutors Use This Game
Tutors use this when a student has seen fractions as parts of a single shape (half of a circle, a quarter of a square) but hasn't yet thought about fractions of a group. The pizza order forces the bridge: 1/2 of 8 toppings isn't a slice of a circle, it's 4 actual things. That mental shift is the start of using fractions as operators on quantities.
Once students have done a few rounds, tutors often ask "how did you split the group?" before the child confirms. The verbal split-then-count routine (divide by the denominator, then multiply by the numerator) is what turns the drag into reasoning.
Often paired with
Plotting fractions on a number line before, multiplying fractions and fraction word problems after.
What students said
Students mentioned the pizza orders, the satisfying box animation when a pizza was correct, and counting out the toppings one by one — many started splitting the tray into denominator-sized groups before reaching for the first topping.

What Your Child Practices
Four dimensions from the Cuemath FUAR taxonomy — Fluency, Understanding, Application, Reasoning — applied to this game.
Fluency
Fluency with finding a fraction of a small group (say, 1/4 of 12 or 2/3 of 9) without writing it out.
Understanding
Understanding that a fraction can act on a group, not just on a single shape — the foundation of fractions as operators.
Application
Application of fractional thinking to 6 different pizza orders, each with a new collection size and a new fraction.
Reasoning
Reasoning about why 1/2 of 8 and 2/4 of 8 give the same answer — and what that says about equivalent fractions.

We love solving doubts
What does it mean to find a fraction of a collection?
Finding a fraction of a collection means taking a fractional part of a group of things — not a part of a single shape. If you have 8 toppings and you need 1/2 of them, you take 4. If you need 3/4 of them, you take 6. The denominator tells you how to split the group into equal parts, and the numerator tells you how many of those parts to keep. It's a fraction acting on a number, not just shading in part of a circle.
Why is finding a fraction of a collection important?
It's the bridge between fractions and the rest of arithmetic. As soon as a child can compute 1/3 of 12, they can compute 1/3 of a price, 1/3 of a recipe, 1/3 of a journey. That single skill turns fractions from a separate topic into something a student uses everywhere — in word problems, in measurement, in ratios in middle school, and in algebra later on.
Does the game explain how to play?
Yes. A short intro up front walks through one order so kids see how the fraction in the order maps to a number of toppings on the pizza. After that, players take orders independently. This means Grade 3 students can play without needing an adult to explain the rules first.
How long does it take to play?
A full playthrough of all 6 rounds takes about 5 minutes. A single round takes under a minute. There's no pressure to finish — the game saves progress in-session and can be restarted anytime.
Is the game free? Will it stay free?
Yes. Find Fraction of a Collection is free to play now and will remain free. It's part of Cuemath Playground — a library of games that Cuemath tutors use with paying students, made freely available as part of Cuemath's mission to make every child MathFit. No signups, no paywalls, no hidden tiers.
Are there ads or distractions in the game?
No. The game has no third-party ads, no pop-ups, no promotional interruptions, no chat, and no user-generated content. A child can play any round from start to finish with nothing on screen except the game itself.
What should my child learn after this?
Once a child is comfortable finding a fraction of a collection, the natural next steps are multiplying fractions by whole numbers (1/4 of 12 is the same as 1/4 × 12), solving fraction word problems, and using fractions in measurement and money contexts. All are Grade 3–4 topics covered in other Cuemath Playground games and in the full Grade 3 math curriculum.
How is this different from Math Gym in the Cuemath app?
This game lives on Cuemath's website as part of Cuemath Playground — a free, browser-based library of concept-specific games tied to grade-level curriculum (this one is built around Grade 3 fractions). Math Gym is a separate section inside the Cuemath app, with daily strategy games, logic puzzles, and mental-math challenges — built around general mathematical fitness rather than a specific topic. Both belong to the MathFit journey, but they serve different purposes: Playground works through curriculum concepts; Math Gym builds daily practice across strategy, logic, and mental math. You don't need the app to play this game.
