AP Credit by College: Top Schools That Give Credit for AP Scores

AP credit is college credit you earn by scoring 3, 4, or 5 on an AP exam. When you earn AP credit, you can skip the matching intro course once you get to college. One exam is usually worth 3 to 8 credit hours. The same AP exam score can be worth eight credits at one college and nothing at another, because every college sets its own policy.

Smart Ways to Use Your AP Credit

Getting the AP credit is the first step. There are four common ways to use AP credit.

• Graduate early: If you earn enough credit to skip a full semester or a full year, you save enough money on tuition, housing, and meal plans.
• Take fewer classes each term: You can stay for the standard four years but take a lighter course load each semester. This protects your GPA and frees up time for research, a job, or an internship during the college.
• Add a second qualification: You can use the free time in your schedule to add a minor, a double major, or an early start on a master's degree. You do this within the same four years and pay the same tuition.
• Skip the hardest intro courses: In engineering and computer science, credit for Calculus BC or Physics C lets you move straight into higher-level courses. You skip the intro classes that are known for the toughest grading.

Does AP Credit Actually Save You Money?

The biggest benefit of AP credit is usually time and flexibility, not a smaller tuition bill. It gives you a lighter schedule, room for a second major, or an earlier graduation. Only graduating early actually lowers the amount you pay.

Most four-year universities use flat tuition. This means you pay one fixed rate for any full-time student who takes roughly 12 to 18 credits a semester. Under this system, using AP credit to drop from 16 credits to 12 does not lower your bill. You pay the same fixed rate for fewer classes. You only save on tuition when you earn enough credit to finish a whole semester or year early and skip that term completely.

Some colleges charge by the credit hour instead. At these schools, every AP credit you do not have to pay for is a direct saving. This is common at community colleges, but it is rare at large four-year universities.

Do Ivy League Colleges Give AP Credit?

At schools like Harvard and Yale, AP scores mostly earn placement into higher-level classes rather than credit toward your degree.

Harvard University AP Credit

In exceptional cases when SAT and ACT tests are not accessible, one of the following can meet the requirement:

• AP exam results  
• IB Actual or Predicted Scores   
• GCSE/A-Level Actual or Predicted Results   
• National Leaving Exams Results or Predictions

Harvard does not give graduation credit for AP exams. A score of 5 is used only for placement, such as meeting a language or departmental requirement.

Yale University AP Credit

If you have completed AP or IB exams, you may include the scores of your choosing in the testing section of your application along with your ACT or SAT score(s). (source)

Yale separates placement from credit. Placement lets you skip an intro course but earns nothing toward your degree; acceleration credit, given only for a 5 (or a 4 on Calculus BC), can help you graduate in fewer terms. AP scores do not appear on the Yale transcript or affect your GPA.

Princeton University AP Credit

Princeton will return to mandatory standardized testing for undergraduate admission beginning with the 2027-28 admission cycle. First-year and transfer applicants seeking to enroll in fall 2028 will need to submit either SAT or ACT scores.

Princeton, however, also states that if you sat for an Advanced Placement (AP) test, you self-report all of your AP scores on your application.

Columbia University AP Credit

AP scores are not required by Columbia, but Columbia accepts your results if you choose to submit them in the testing section. Columbia quotes 'We do often find AP exam scores helpful in our review.'

University of Pennsylvania AP Credit

Penn awards credit almost entirely for a score of 5, but only in specific subjects. A 5 on AP Calculus BC earns credit for Math 1300 (students entering 2025 onward), while AP Calculus AB earns no credit at all.

A 5 also earns credit in Physics C, Computer Science A, and Economics (Micro and Macro), and foreign-language exams can fulfil the language requirement, with a 5 earning course credit and a 4 satisfying the requirement without it.

Brown University AP Credit

Dartmouth College AP Credit

Dartmouth will grant credit on entrance for AP exams. In many subject areas, these courses will be used for exemption and placement. Credit on entrance appears on the Dartmouth transcript.

Cornell University AP Credit

Cornell's AP credit depends heavily on which college and major you enter. A 4 or 5 on AP Calculus BC earns non-engineering students 8 credits, placing them out of both Calculus I and Calculus II, while engineering majors need a 5 to earn 4 credits. A 4 or 5 on AP Calculus AB (or the AB subscore) earns 4 credits and places non-engineering students out of Calculus I.

Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) AP Credit

MIT is strict: it grants credit only for an AP score of 5, with no partial credit for lower scores. A 5 on AP Calculus BC earns credit for 18.01 (MIT's single-variable calculus course), while a 5 on AP Calculus AB earns no credit but lets you enroll in the accelerated 18.01A/18.02A sequence.

MIT gives no credit for AP Biology, Chemistry, Computer Science, Environmental Science, or Statistics, and AP credit cannot satisfy any part of the HASS Requirement.

Stanford University AP Credit

AP scores are not mandatory for Stanford admissions but they do add academic context.

Stanford awards up to 45 quarter units of external test credit toward a degree, and math is among the most rewarding subjects. A 5 on AP Calculus BC earns 10 units, placing you out of Stanford's entire single-variable calculus sequence (MATH 19, 20, and 21), while a 4 on BC or a 5 on AP Calculus AB earns 6 units. You can be credited for only one exam per subject.

Duke University AP Credit

Duke considers most AP scores for specific Duke course credit rather than generic electives. In math, a 5 on AP Calculus BC earns credit for two courses (MATH 21 and 22), while a 4 on BC or a 5 on AP Calculus AB earns one (MATH 21). Scores are submitted directly to Duke's Office of the University Registrar.

New York University (NYU) AP Credit

NYU has one of the most flexible testing policies in the country: instead of the SAT or ACT, you can submit three AP exam scores, one Humanities, one Math or Science, and one of your choice. Applicants to Stern (business) or Tandon (engineering) must include a math exam among the three: AP Precalculus, AP Calculus AB or BC, or Statistics.

Notre Dame awards AP credit for scores of 4 and 5, with most subjects requiring a 5. In math, AP Calculus BC with a 5 earns 8 credits for both Calculus I and II, while AP Calculus AB with a 5 earns 4 credits for Calculus I. Most AP credit posts as general elective credit rather than satisfying University, college, or major requirements, and pre-health and life-science majors must retake biology, chemistry, and physics on campus regardless of their AP scores.

AP Credit at Top Public Universities

Public universities tend to be far more generous with AP credit, since state systems use it to help students save on tuition and graduate on time.

University of California Berkeley & UCLA AP Credit

A 4 or 5 AP score can earn you college credit before you even set foot on campus, which means skipping some intro courses and saving time and tuition. AP Calculus BC is one of the most rewarding: a qualifying score is worth about two college courses' worth of credit, while AP Calculus AB is worth about half that. That credit can count toward graduation or general requirements, depending on the campus.

University of Virginia (UVA) AP Credit

UVA accepts scores of 3, 4, or 5, with up to 12 credit hours for a single 5 in some subjects (60 credits max before enrolling). It distinguishes course-equivalent credit from generic elective credit, and the latter cannot satisfy General Education requirements. Taking the UVA course removes the test credit.

North Carolina law requires all 16 UNC-system public universities to grant course credit for any AP score of 3 or higher, so UNC's policy is unusually generous. That credit can even count toward General Education requirements, and it is forfeited only if you take the equivalent course.

Purdue University AP Credit

Purdue is generous with AP credit and starts awarding it at a score of 3, though the exact course you earn depends on the subject: some STEM courses require a 4 or 5 for a direct course match, while a 3 often earns undistributed credit in that subject area. In math, AP Calculus BC is the standout: a 4 or 5 earns credit for both Calculus I and Calculus II (MA 16500 and MA 16600), while AP Calculus AB with a 4 or 5 earns just Calculus I. As a UC campus, UCI doesn’t use test scores in admissions, but it still awards AP credit after you enroll: a 3, 4, or 5 earns credit toward graduation. In math, AP Calculus BC is worth the most, a 4 or 5 gives 8 units and clears the full first-year calculus sequence, while AP Calculus AB gives 4 units for the first course. If you take both AB and BC, credit is capped at 8 units combined. AP units count toward graduation and, helpfully, don’t count against UC’s maximum-unit ceilings.
