San Mateo Union High School District: When Do We Enroll?

Your 8th grader starts at a San Mateo Union high school in fall 2027. Enrollment opens at 8:30 a.m. on December 1, 2026, and closes at 11:59 p.m. on February 5, 2027. That is a month later than last cycle's November start, so reset the calendar if an older sibling taught you the old dates.

What the December window actually buys

Inside the district's Priority 1 Enrollment Window, complete two things: residency verification and the online enrollment form. That gets you:

• Priority assignment to the school of residence. You would likely get it anyway; this locks it in.
• The right to ask for a different school. Sibling Transfer and Intra-District Transfer applications are only accepted during this window.

Last cycle, transfer requests after that cycle's deadline, February 6, 2026, were automatically denied; expect the same rule at this cycle's deadline, February 5, 2027. Intra-District requests go to a lottery in February, and the district notifies families by letter.

The dates, in order

• December 1, 2026: Priority 1 opens at 8:30 a.m. The enrollment form for 2027-28 goes live on the district's enrollment page, and transfer requests open.
• February 5, 2027: Priority 1 closes at 11:59 p.m. Last day for any transfer request.
• February 2027: Transfer lottery.
• March 1-31, 2027: Course Information and Freshmen Scheduling Window. Next year's actual classes take shape here.
• End of July 2027: Data Confirmation, a routine records update.

The math decision that follows the window

Enrollment settles the school. The math class is settled separately, by transcript, not a test. 9th graders start in Algebra 1 at Aragon, Burlingame, Mills, and San Mateo High; Hillsdale starts at Geometry, Capuchino at Math 1. Those are each school's standard starting courses, assigned automatically; Math 1 is the first course of Capuchino's own sequence, and Capuchino's own placement test can move a child straight to Math 2. A transcript from the middle school or an accredited program, showing the prerequisites done, moves the start up, and the middle school handles it, not the high school. A child finishing Algebra 1 in 8th grade does not repeat it; Geometry is the plan (details in the FAQ below).

The exception is the compressed track: Geometry, Algebra 2, and Pre-Calculus across 9th and 10th grade, entered through the Math Acceleration Exam. The district recommends it only for students with an A in Algebra 1 semester 1, a 7th-grade state test (CAASPP) score of 2600 or above, and a MAP score of 250 or above. For the class that entered in fall 2026, the exam was held March 14, 2026; the 2027 dates were not posted at our last check, so treat mid-March as the pattern. Put together: enroll in December, ask for any transfer by February 5, and walk into the March scheduling window already knowing whether the accelerated track is a realistic ask.

When do we enroll for 2027-28?

What happens if we miss February 5?

Transfer requests die, but enrollment stays open. Under the district's stated rule, transfer requests after the deadline are automatically denied. Enrollment itself does not close - the district registers arriving families past the window and is still registering students for the current year now - but the priority benefits are gone: priority assignment to your school of residence and the right to ask for a transfer.

Is the December 1 start new?

Yes. Last cycle the window opened November 3, 2025, and closed February 6, 2026. This cycle it opens December 1, 2026 and closes February 5, 2027.

Does my 8th grader take a placement test for 9th-grade math?

By default, no. Placement is transcript-based: 9th graders start in Algebra 1 at Aragon, Burlingame, Mills, and San Mateo High (Geometry at Hillsdale, Math 1 at Capuchino) unless a transcript shows the prerequisites are already done. The one test is the optional Math Acceleration Exam for the compressed track, and its spring 2027 dates were still not posted at our September 2 check.

My child is taking Algebra 1 in 8th grade. What do they start with in 9th?

Geometry is the plan, not Algebra 1 again: a middle school transcript showing Algebra 1 done moves the start past it, and Burlingame's own math FAQ names Geometry as the course to plan for. Confirm the exact course with your middle school counselor. The Math Acceleration Exam only matters if you want the compressed track, which packs three courses into two years.
