What we found:

For a parent or student who is visiting Cuemath for the first time, they can start with a free math test and also sign up for a free trial class. The test covers ratios, expressions, and early algebraic thinking, specific enough to surface real gaps, not just assign a grade level.

Tutor matching follows within 24 hours. In our parent interviews, the most consistent observation was that the same-tutor model changed how willing students were to ask questions; parents attributed this to familiarity with the instructor, not just the quality of the curriculum.

Math anxiety, which affects an estimated 20 to 30 percent of middle schoolers, came up repeatedly as something parents saw reduce over the first 6 to 8 weeks with a consistent Cuemath tutor.

What we found:

We visited 2-3 Mathnasium center websites and reviewed the enrollment process across locations in different states. The placement assessment is the platform's clearest differentiator. It produces a specific gap report before any instruction begins, rather than placing a student by grade level.

However, parent reviews surfaced significant variance in instruction quality by franchise. Parents near centers with experienced staff reported good foundational results; parents near centers staffed primarily by college students described a worksheet-based experience with minimal actual instruction.

3. Outschool

During my research on Google and Reddit, Outschool was recommended for middle school math tutoring. I looked at their website and found that it is not math-dedicated. It offers a mix of courses across math, business, and career-related subjects.

In terms of offerings, it lists courses grade-wise. For every grade, they have pre-recorded courses made by a tutor. You can see the tutor details, and as shown in the screenshot below, it clearly states that you get pre-recorded lessons with teacher support. This is not 1:1 tutoring. There is no way to evaluate a teacher's effectiveness before paying for a class.

Outschool also has a 1:1 coaching section with private math tutor listings. These are live tutor meetings where the tutor and student get on a call to discuss concepts. However, Outschool does not ensure how concepts are taught. This is where Cuemath has an advantage: it offers the LEAP platform, where tutors can teach concepts through real-world simulations, 3D examples, videos, and a shared whiteboard.

But overall, parents have used Outschool for middle school math tutoring, and some of them had a really good experience. Parents who like Outschool mention that it is good for catching up on concepts in a low-pressure way.

Revolution Prep started as a test prep company and has since expanded into K-8 academic tutoring covering math, reading, and writing. If your middle schooler needs a focused push before a big exam or is struggling with one specific concept, the Revolution Prep can work well. 

That said, there are a few things worth knowing before you sign up. 

There's no free trial or even a video on the website where we could see how the classes work. The minimum commitment is 10 sessions at $990, which means you're spending nearly $1,000 before you know whether your child clicks with the tutor or the format. For a middle schooler who's already resistant to tutoring, that's a real risk.

The pricing is the same: $99 per session across all package sizes. You don't get a discount for committing to 20 or 30 sessions, which is unusual for a tutoring program.

We also wanted to look into the math tutors, who they are, and what experience they hold. According to the website (image below), Revolution prep tutors work across math, reading, and writing, so you're not getting a dedicated math tutor. For middle school students working through pre-algebra, ratios, or early geometry, curriculum-specific expertise matters more than it does in elementary grades.

It's also not clear from their site how sessions are personalized to your child's specific gaps, or whether your child works with the same tutor consistently across sessions. 

5. IXL

IXL is a self-paced learning platform that covers math, language arts, science, and social studies. It is not a tutoring service. There are no live tutors, no 1-on-1 classes, and no one explaining concepts in real time. What you get instead is a large, well-organized library of concept lessons, practice problems, and quizzes that your child works through on their own.

For middle school math, the coverage is solid. Pre-algebra, ratios, integers, geometry, statistics; the skills your child is actually working through in class are all here, aligned to grade level.

A different and new feature that we saw was the IXL Recommendation Zone. It is like a personalized feed that suggests what your child should work on next based on what they've already learned and how they've performed.

Math games are currently available until 5th grade, so middle schoolers won't benefit from that yet.

The price is hard to argue with. A family membership for a single subject starts at $9.95 per month, which gives you access to thousands of lessons and practice problems.

The honest limitation: IXL works best for students who already have a baseline understanding and just need consistent practice to stay sharp. If your middle schooler is behind on foundational concepts or wants to push ahead into accelerated math, a platform without a live expert in their corner will only take them so far.

Tutor.com provides 24/7 on-demand access to available tutors. A student can connect within minutes at any hour — useful for middle schoolers stuck on a problem set late at night. There is no consistent tutor, no curriculum continuity across sessions, and sessions end at the time limit regardless of whether the problem is resolved.
